State of Tennessee Tipton CountyThe undersigned commissioners appointed by this County Court of said County to partition and divide the farm and slaves of the Estate of Daniel R. Whiltey --- among the Heirs and distribution mentioned in the d--- order by which we were appointed, After being duly sworn have formed to perform the duty assigned us follow. We first recored the value of all the slaves belonging to said estate and fixed the valuation at the Slave annexes to shine numer respectively of Mablou & Patience to celo and inform Negros which we ---- be North One hundred and Eighty four dollars to take ---- their agrigate value of which we found to be $109,228.00 Dollars and by deducting $184.00 dollars from which -- $119,044.00 Dollars to be divided into l—equal parts which M--- each Share Amount to $10,904.00 Dollars. RESEARCH FOCUSThe focus is Jerry Sanders and his family.
Source: Minute Book “E” Page 433-43?, January 1857 citing “(Covington, Tennessee); photocopied Aug 2003 (note the last page is missing from this transcript) This is a court ordered division of the Whitley Estate dividing the possessions and property (slaves) among the surviving family members. Each heir was to receive approximately $10,900 worth of property.
The following information is genealogically significant: Like most documents of this period this one was completely hand written and extremely difficult to transcribe. The document spells Whitley “Whiltey” in many places. I will have this transcript reviewed by a expert to confirm the spelling and accuracy. Jerry and his wife Emily Webb are listed in this document on near the bottom of page 437 along with their three children Jerry (Jr.), Jane and Richmond. Oliver Webb is also listed in the inventory. He and Emily are the only Webb’s listed. Could they have been brother and sister?
RESEARCH PLANThis division suggests several possibilities for continuing the investigation of Jerry Sanders, Emily Webb and family. The research plan below includes the sources to be examined, listed in the approximate order I would approach them. I would be prepared, however, to change the order and add to or subtract from the list, depending on information found in the first few sources. 1. The 1870, 1880, 1890, 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930 census records of Tipton County for the five Sanders listed above. 2. The tract or sectional index to find where Francis I. & Catherine Whiltey’s land was located.
